WORKSHOP 1

WHAT IS SEQUENTIAL ART?

Suggested Duration: Approx. 8 hours*

Sequential art is a term proposed by comics artist Will Eisner to describe art forms that use images deployed in a specific order for the purpose of graphic storytelling or conveying information. Comics are the most common example of sequential art. We know the popularity of movies based on comics, but how many people have seen or read a comic that inspired the films they love? This workshop allows students to become their own comic writer and sequential artist telling their unique stories in their own unique voice. What is Sequential Art? will expose students to a variety of comic books, strengthen not only their narration skills but their vision of how it is they want their worlds to be imagined.

The takeaway items are a comic script and an illustrated 3 to 4 page comic, or a large Sunday Comic.

WORKSHOP 2

Form + Structure: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Suggested Duration: Approx. 4 Hours*

This workshop introduces students to drawing the human body and developing characters of their own design. Students will gain a miniature lesson on the skeleton and basic muscle groups which will help students confidently draw any figure. Then, with a basic understanding of the human body, we can begin to stretch and squish the parts of the body in order to create our own original lifeforms. Students will be encouraged to take their lifeforms and develop narratives around them for a comic book cover or small Sunday comic.

The takeaway items would be figure drawings, a character profile of students’ character; as well as a small Sunday comic or a comic cover.

WORKSHOP 3

COMIC SCRIPTING: Creating the story

Suggested Duration: Approx. 3 Hours*

Students will develop narratives to transform into comic stories they would like to one day draw. Students will learn to write real or imagined stories in a script format breaking it down to protagonist, antagonist, and setting; as well as utilize compression and decompression of time.

The takeaway items would be a full comic script. We recommend this workshop to Language Arts teachers.

*We highly recommend multi-day workshops for deeper engagement and absorption of the material. The suggested duration is intended to be broken up over the course of 3-8 sessions.
